Georgia’s National Wine Agency’s unwavering commitment to quality control has been instrumental in enhancing the reputation and marketability of Georgian wines and spirits.

In a concerted effort to bolster the competitiveness of Georgian alcoholic beverages on both domestic and international fronts, the National Wine Agency (NWA) of Georgia has intensified its quality control measures. These initiatives aim to ensure that Georgian wines and other alcoholic products consistently meet and exceed global standards, thereby enhancing their market appeal and consumer trust.​

Comprehensive Quality Control Measures

Throughout 2024, the NWA conducted extensive inspections across various production facilities. State control and supervision, focusing on compliance with Georgia’s legislative requirements for wine production processes, were executed in 28 companies. Out of 154 samples collected, violations were identified in 34 samples from six companies. ​

In addition to state controls, 376 inspection activities were carried out, encompassing 83 companies. Of the 1,927 samples analysed, 37 samples from 16 companies exhibited discrepancies. Furthermore, international auditing firms such as Bureau Veritas and SGS assessed 74 companies, with 11 samples from four companies failing to meet the requisite standards.

Organoleptic Testing and Sensory Evaluations

To ensure the sensory quality of export-bound alcoholic beverages, the NWA’s tasting commission conducted 284 organoleptic evaluations. Of 13,006 samples assessed, 623 were deemed unsatisfactory, highlighting the agency’s stringent quality benchmarks. ​

Market Impact and Export Growth

The rigorous quality control measures have positively influenced Georgia’s export performance. In 2024, the country exported approximately 95 million litres of wine, valued at $276.1 million, marking a 7% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. Notably, exports to countries like the United States, Germany, and Poland experienced significant growth.

Additionally, exports of spirits reached 48 million litres, generating nearly $289 million in revenue—a 47% increase from the prior year. This surge underscores the global market’s growing appreciation for Georgian alcoholic beverages. ​

The NWA emphasises that maintaining high-quality standards is pivotal for sustaining and expanding Georgia’s presence in the global wine and spirits market. By adhering to international quality benchmarks, Georgian producers can ensure consumer confidence and foster long-term industry growth.​
