From Advertising Composition to Film Music Composition: An Interview with Tapas Relia

Tapas Relia is a Music Composer/Producer working in Bollywood, television and the Ad Industry. Based in Mumbai, he has been working since the last 20 years and scored the music for hundreds of Ad films and around a dozen Movies.

His latest commercial project was the hugely successful Hotstar Exclusive political thriller “City Of Dreams”, which was preceded by ‘Dhanak’ a movie directed by Nagesh Kukunoor which won the 2017 National Award for the best film, and the Silver Bear at Berlinale Film Festival.


Tapas is known for his famous advertising campaigns for brands like Close-Up (toothpaste), Domino’s, Amaron Batteries, IPL, Hero Honda among others, and for movies like Hanuman, Return Of Hanuman, Ferrari Ki Sawari & Lakshmi.


His jingle for Close-Up (toothpaste) was a huge success and is mentioned in the shortlist of top Indian jingles of all time. His other trend-setting campaigns include the Amaron Batteries Claymation campaign, Domino’s Pizza ‘Pizza Aaye Free” campaign, Hero Honda campaign, IPL Mumbai Indians Anthem, among others.


Tapas works across a variety of genres from Pop and Contemporary to Classical and Folk. He is known for his unique blend of Indian melodies with contemporary arguments that sound cinematic and larger than life, and cater largely to cinema and television.


He used this expertise in composing for successful launch campaigns (Ads/Promos) for prestigious shows like Mahabharat (2013) Kaun Banega Crorepati-Season 3, Big Boss, Master Chef and many more.


His first movie in Bollywood was the path-breaking Animation movie ‘Hanuman’, which was India’s first-ever Animation Film. Since then he has worked with famous Bollywood Directors like Anurag Kashyap, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Priyadarshan, Vipul Shah and Nagesh Kukunoor.


With ‘Yakeen Rakh Grahan Hatega’ and ‘Jogi Re’, his latest singles that released this year, he marks his foray into the world of Independent Music, as a songwriter and singer. Currently, he is working on the score of an Independent American Film, due for release later this year.
